Running for District Office

Hello Southeast District,

One of the greatest services you can perform within the Southeast District, outside of your own chapter, is to be a member of the Southeast District Council. The elected positions are: President, Vice President of Membership, Vice President of Special Projects, Secretary, and Treasurer.

The requirements to run for any elected office are as follows:
1. Be an active member of Tau Beta Sigma in good standing and an active member at the time of election and serving the university band during the term.

2. Be at least a sophomore or a second-year student at a college or university.

3. Create a packet to be submitted to the Nominations Committee Chair at the first separate session of SED Convention which contains:
a. Letter of Intent – this should state name, chapter, and the office
b. Tau Beta Sigma resume – this should include anything of relevant sorority experience for the office
c. Goals for the office
d. Biography and professional head shot
e. A letter of recommendation from the Chapter
f. A letter of recommendation from the Chapter Sponsor

4. At least 8 copies of the packet (details above) need to be brought to an interview with the Nominations Committee at SED Convention on Saturday.

5. Any officer elected in their final semester of college must obtain Life Membership by their graduation date
***Please note, this is not what our current constitution says, however the National Constitution was changed this summer at NatCon2013, therefore the SED Constitution this year will be revised to reflect this change.***

Also, an additional (but not mandatory) publicity opportunity for any potential candidates wishing to preview their documents on the SED website, before SED Convention, may email their information to Belinda Baker (sedpres@tbsigma.org) by March 7th, 2014 (two weeks before SED).

If you are interested in running for a specific office on the Council and have questions, a great contact is the person who currently holds that office or any previous officers! Please do not hesitate to ask questions and seek information as you prepare to broadcast your ideas to the whole of the SED at convention in March! I cannot wait to see the future leaders that step up for the SED, if you have any questions, please contact anyone who you see fit to ask for help and barter ideas with! You can also find the duties of each office in the SED Constitution, which can be found on the SED Website (

PLEASE READ : MARCH NEWS FOR SED SERVICE

Greetings SED,

Now This is what I call March Madness! There is so much going on this coming Month for the SED! So please, read this email and share the information with your brothers and sisters!

First bit of news:

March starts Service in Schools Month for TBS here in the SED! As some of you may know, it is also Service in our Schools Month for the nation, so this is a great opportunity to show how much we can contribute to the Southeast! I’m not going to lay out a plan like I did for Service in Music Month, because I want you all to have some creative freedom, so get crazy!! Also, logs are not necessary this time around either, because we only have about two weeks of March until SED convention. However, if your chapter chooses to participate and submits a log to me by March 21st (Day 1 of SED Convention), I will recognize your hard work at SED in front of all of your sisters and brothers! Wouldn’t that be awesome??

And on top of that, there’s…..You guessed it! A service project!!

This is an announcement to some and a reminder to others about the TBS SED Musical Trash=Treasure Drive! At DLC this past weekend, I collected sheet music from Sisters and brothers who had some to donate!

And next, at SED Convention, I will have bins to collect anything musical that you are willing to donate!

Also, from this weekend, all the way to the week of SED Convention, I will be accepting any sort of musical donation that is mailed to my address! If you guys are awesome(which you know you are), and mail a lot of things to me, I’ll take pictures of them and make a big collage to show off how much everyone cares! Please, take some time and go through your closets. You have to have an old flip folder or cork grease lying around that never gets touched. right?

My Address is:

1000 Whaley St. Apt. 4129
Columbia, SC 29201

Please spread awareness to your chapters! Copy and paste this message into your chapter Facebook pages, or chapter email, or however you want to do it! I’m going to be posting reminders all the way up to SED, but I need your help!

Remember, It’s an honor to be selected to serve!

SED Banquet Slideshow

Greeting Sisters and Brothers!

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Bridgette Bell and I’m the Southeast District Historian for Tau Beta Sigma. This year at the SED banquet, I hope to have a slideshow displaying photos of Brothers and Sisters from all across the district participating in events in music, service and Brotherhood/Sisterhood. If you have a favorite photo (or photos) that you’d like to see in the slideshow at Convention, please send them and a short description to sedhistorian@tbsigma.org by March 15, 2014.

Thank you and MLITB!

The Membership Resource has arrived!

Dear SED sisters,

Membership is essential to our organization. A lot of times people have questions about Membership issues. These can include recruitment, social/bonding activities, and Continuing Membership Education. Sometimes you might just need an idea to get you started or would like a little bit more information about something. That is what the Membership Resource is supposed to help with!

In my platform for this office I talked about putting together a resource like this, and now IT IS HERE! The resource is up and running on the website (www.tbssed.org). Look under the “Resources” tab and then click on “Membership Resource Database.” It is broken up into sections based on the type of information. When you click on a specific topic it will download the file for you, or you can download a zip file of all of the resources at the bottom of the page. Our wonderful Webmaster helped put this online for everyone’s use (Thanks, Alfred!!). Additionally, a hard (CD) copy of this resource HAS BEEN MAILED to your chapter, so be on the lookout!

The 2013-2014 Council and I have worked very hard to put together this membership resource with some information and examples for you all.  It covers a wide variety of topics and has information on SED History, Parliamentary Procedure, Continuing Membership Education, the Treasury, and Membership Recruitment. I hope that you may find some of this information useful for your chapter, and as more needs or questions arise, of course things can be added to the resource on the website.

These documents are not meant to be the only/final word on anything your chapter does. It is always important to do what works for and is best for your own specific chapter. These documents are solely meant to be a resource for your chapter should you need them.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or any of the other SED Council members. We would love to hear from you!

Much love in the bond,

Christa Hall
SED Vice President of Membership 2013-2014

Spring Events and SED CONVENTION PAPERWORK

Hello Southeast District of Tau Beta Sigma,

Hopefully, you have gotten at least one email from me so far announcing our 2 big spring events. But if not, here is another one.

A WEEK FROM TODAY, 7 days, February 8th, is our annual District Leadership Conference. The 2014 DLC will be hosted in Chapel Hill, North Carolina at UNC-Chapel Hill. I am so very excited for DLC, as both councils have prepared wonderful schedules for you to learn, enjoy, and even experience, more about the organization(s) we all love. You can read more about DLC this weekend, register, and even find some area hotels and dining options at their website.

—-> http://seddlc2014.webs.com/ <----

After DLC, the next BIG THING is the 2014 Southeast District Convention! SED will be in Atlanta, GA, hosted by the two chapters from the Georgia Institute of Technology, on March 21-23, 2014! They have amazing facilities at GT, and both councils are very excited for our whole weekend in ATL! You can view their website for information like scheduling, registration, banquet, hotel and dining options, and even convention paperwork at

—-> http://www.sed2014.com/ <----

But speaking of convention paperwork, I am very proud to announce this year’s SED Convention information is NOT paperwork. It is a digital experience!

So, if you are a TBS SED President, or a chapter delegate, the information I need from you can all be filled out ONLINE. I have included the link below.

The 4 things you need to know:

1. Only ONE person per chapter should fill out this paperwork (either the chapter president or the official delegate).
2. EVERY chapter needs to fill it out, whether you are attending SED Convention or not.
3. You need to know whether you are attending, before you fill it out.
3.5. You will only fill out the necessary information, based on your circumstances.
4. It needs to be filled out by 11:59pm EST on Friday, February 21, 2014.

You can find the convention paperwork here or you can go to the SED Convention website and look under Register/Convention Forms.

If you have any questions or concerns about the paperwork, please get in touch with me (sedpres@tbsigma.org) ASAP! Again, SED Information is due (via the online form) on February 21, 2014.

DLC & SED Convention!!

Hello Southeast District of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma,

The 2013-2014 Joint SED Council has arrived home after a very productive trip to ATL with the hosts of the 2014 SED Convention! We are pleased to inform you Georgia Tech has been hard at work on Convention! The best news is- we are officially ready to share with you the details of this year’s SED Convention!!!

The 2014 SED Convention will be held in Atlanta, GA at the Georgia Institute of Technology, March 21-23, 2014.

Below is brief information regarding some of the larger details about SED! You can find more- including pricing, registration, parking, and directions- on the website at sed2014.com.

  • Registration for the 2014 SED will be $49.75. The fee for this year’s SED includes registration, a t-shirt, banquet, and use of a shuttle from the Sol Melia (host hotel) to Georgia Tech.
  • The host hotel, Sol Melia, is within a mile from campus and is only $115 a night (a GREAT price in the middle of downtown/Midtown Atlanta)!!
  • The full schedule, detailing workshops and presenters will be available very soon! Both councils are tying up the last few items!! Complete with joint workshops, a conducting workshop, and even workshops given by your National Officers- this will be an SED you will NOT want to miss!
  • SED Convention paperwork for both Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi will be released this week and will be due by February 21, 2014! This paperwork must be filled out by every chapter (even those who will not be in attendance at 2014 SED). Further information will be sent to each chapter president and also will be found on the SED website.

Both of the SED Councils, as well as both host chapters, have been hard at work to get everything prepared for our spring events! Remember to register for DLC on their website at seddlc2014.webs.com.

We hope you make the trip to see us in Chapel Hill, NC for the 2014 SED DLC on February 8, 2014 and in Atlanta, GA on March 21-23, 2014 for the 2014 SED Convention!

If you have any questions regarding either event, please feel free to contact a member of your district council or either host chapter.

Tidings of Music and Joy! (DLC/SED Information)

Hello Southeast District of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma,

The 2013-2014 Joint SED Council is pleased to officially invite you to the two largest SED events of the year- the District Leadership Conference and SED Convention!

The 2014 DLC will be held in Chapel Hill, NC at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill on February 8, 2014. You can find information regarding area hotels, dining, maps, and registration on their website here (seddlc2014.webs.com).

In Chapel Hill this year, the fraternity will be breaking down chapter functions to establish effective and accomplished practices throughout the Southeast District. Each hour, brothers will have the opportunity to learn from not only district officers, but also chapter officers from around the SED.

At the same time, Tau Beta Sigma has chosen to enlarge the basics of DLC to include information for membership candidates, recent initiates, chapter officers, and everyone else! For the Sisters, the day will be broken into 4 the facets of our new TBS SED Mission Statement: Music, Leadership, Service, and Sisterhood. During each of the 4 blocks, attendees will be able to learn and experience the bond in new and different ways than ever before!

Attendance typically runs smaller at DLC than at SED Convention, allowing the workshops and activities a more personal touch. The 2014 DLC will have a lot to offer everyone- from membership candidates to chapter presidents (and everyone in between)! I hope you will join us on February 8, 2014 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill! And here’s the best part- THERE IS NO CHARGE TO ATTEND!!! Just register and show up!

Go ahead and mark your calendars for the 2014 SED Convention! It will be held in Atlanta, GA at the Georgia Institute of Technology- March 21-23, 2014. Details to come soon!

Both of the SED Councils, as well as both host chapters, have been hard at work to get their respective websites up and running as soon as possible. The schedule for both events will be available to you, as soon as they are completed (which hopefully will be very shortly).

So, for your travel and planning purposes, IT IS TIME! Take a look at the DLC website now, start planning your trip, and we will see you in Chapel Hill on February 8, 2014. The complete information regarding the 2014 SED will be out soon and we hope to see you in Atlanta on March 21-23, 2014.

If you have any questions regarding either event, please feel free to contact a member of your district council or either host chapter.

Greetings from the Treasury…

Hello SED,

I hope you all have had a wonderful holiday season, and are ready to enjoy ringing in a new year. I have a few things I want to make sure everyone is aware of, as they are rather exciting!

First off:
Did you know that your chapter is eligible for two awards by shear generosity of donation!? That’s right! Your chapter can earn the SHELLS Full Participation Certificate by donating just $1.00 per active member in your chapter to the Rainy Day Fund. The amount of active members that will determine your participation status will be however many are reported in the online system at the beginning of SED. Also, your chapter is eligible for the SHELLS Full Participation Award, and you need to be the chapter that donates to most money to the Rainy Day fund. The form to use for these donations can be accessed by clicking here.

Second:
Speaking of the Rainy Day Fund, this is just a reminder that it is accessible to chapters who are in need of financial assistance. Just fill out the form here, attach all other necessary documents outlined, and send it to me. Everything you need should be there, but just in case you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me.

Third:
I am proud to remind you about the recent announcement (in the last SHELLS) of the SED Logo Competition. This is a new venture we are trying out to get more diversity in the SED Store. We want to see more than just t-shirts, but we also want you to be the designer! The form, with all necessary information, can be found here.

Fourth:
Don’t forget about the SED Merchandise Page for all the TBS SED gear we have to offer. Make sure to stock up before DLC and SED Convention!

I hope you had a wonderful holiday season, and have a great new year. Safe travels to all, and good luck to those of you in the bowls!

SHELLS, Winter

Greetings SED,

The recent edition of SHELLS, from the your TBS SED Council was sent out to the SED Chapter Presidents earlier this week. However, we wanted to get it into as many inboxes as possible! SOOOO, without further ado, here is the TBS SED Council’s Publication – SHELLS, Winter Edition.

I hope you enjoy it and I hope you have a very Merry Christmas (Or Happy Holidays, if you are not a Christmas celebrator)!
