PSA: Active Membership Requirements — PLEASE READ.

Greetings SED members,

Tonight, I am going to be the bearer of bad news and warnings…

As we started this year, it has come to my attention that several Southeast District chapters have been committing a serious TBS crime.

The National Constitution of Tau Beta Sigma has certain rules and requirements for active membership, and they must be followed.

The requirements for active membership are as follows:
1. You must be a college or university student.
2. You must be enrolled and actively participating in the band

3. You must pay current active membership dues for the year ($85, due Sept 30)

So, looking at the second requirement, you must be enrolled and actively participating in the band. If you are a member of Tau Beta Sigma, to be an active member, you must be enrolled in a band course, every semester you are active.

However, in the event a member of the Sorority is unable to enroll and actively participate in band, the person may continue as an active member for the academic term provided chapter members and sponsor so desire. This action and exception must be approved by the National President, Nicole Sanchez.

I am going to type it again, please understand it is not because I do not think you are capable of understanding, just that if you and your chapter are found to be making your own exceptions, you can and will be suspended!

If you are an active member in Tau Beta Sigma, you must be enrolled in a band course. ANY exceptions must go through the National President, Nicole Sanchez.

This includes color guard, dance line, majorettes, ALL active members of TBS. Your options if not enrolled in a band class include: getting permission from National President (Nicole Sanchez), going conditional for the semester (keeping in mind the conditional requirements in the National Constitution), or going inactive.

We do NOT want to see an influx of members becoming conditional or inactive, however the rules of the National Tau Beta Sigma organization apply to every member and every chapter. If you are an active member, you MUST be enrolled in a band. Updates concerning procedures for being granted an exception are coming soon, so stay tuned.

If you have any further questions, DO NOT HESITATE to contact a district council member or a national council member with questions. We want to help any chapter this applies to sort through this and get on track with all national requirements for membership.

Eighth Note Bids!

To the Southeast District of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma,

The Eighth Note is a resource publication, provided for the SED and the nation, which both monitors and showcases the outstanding work done by our Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma chapters. The joint SED Councils are now accepting bids for the 2013-2014 Joint Publication- the Eighth Note. We encourage you to work jointly with the Kappa Kappa Psi or Tau Beta Sigma chapters at your school or in your surrounding area.

This year, the Joint Councils have formulated more modern guidelines for the publication and production of the Eighth Note; you can find the guidelines listed below. Also, please see the attachment for the bid requirements.

Guidelines for the 2013-2014 Eighth Note:

1. There will be only one printed edition of the Eighth Note this year, specifics of that can be found below. However, due to this, the main Eighth Note responsibilities will now be electronic, via the website (currently at www.tbssedpublications.com a site hosted through WordPress). Hosting the Eighth Note online will require the chapter(s) to:

· Update the website with host chapter and contact information
· Encourage chapters in the SED to contribute articles year-round discussing (an) inspiring or complex experience(s) at their school or chapter
· Host and advertise contests throughout the year to further encourage article submissions and photo submissions for the website
· Begin a “from the editor” column reporting news and activities by the host chapter(s), giving readers an inside look at both the Eighth Note creation and other events held by the host chapter(s)
· At the start of each month, post quotes or selections from “featured articles” to capture reader’s attention and bring people to the Eighth Note website
· Update the website bi-weekly with article and photo submissions

2. Compile one “Year in Review” Edition of the Eighth Note. This edition must be printed for dispersing at the 2014 SED Convention on March 21-23, 2014 at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA. This edition must include:

· A letter from a National Officer from both KKPsi and TBSigma
· A letter from both the KKPsi and TBSigma SED Presidents
· A selection of the “best” articles from the year, chosen by the host chapter and approved by the district councils
· A letter from the Editor (the host chapter(s))

Please electronically submit bids to both Kyle Sullivan (sedpresident@kkpsi.org) and Belinda Baker (sedpres@tbsigma.org) by September 20, 2013.

Dear Shells….!

Hey SisTAUs!

I hope everyone is ready to get back into the swing of things with school and band life, dorm/apartment move in, and more service with Tau Beta Sigma!

The Southeast District’s SHELLS publication is up and running! We sent out the first issue of this year over the summer! The Summer edition can be found on the website (tbssed.org), on the SED issuu page (issuu.com/tbssed), and we also sent the edition to every chapter president! If you have not seen the Summer edition, contact one of your district council members!

Although SHELLS is a district publication, it’s not all about us! There is a place in SHELLS, for each of your voices. If you look through the publication, it has a section called “Dear SHELLS…” The purpose of this section for you all to send questions about anything dealing with Tau Beta Sigma. If you have a question you would like to ask Shells the turtle, email it to shells@tbsigma.org.

Thank you all so much, and be sure to stay tuned for the first issue of the Fall Semester! : )

Farewell for now!

NatCon2013 Update

Hey SED,

I am delighted to tell you that this past week the Southeast District was represented by 30 of our most courageous and dedicated individuals! It takes a lot of commitment and love for our sorority to drive, train. or fly all the way to the NED for a whole week! Although we are in various states of travel right now, I do want to take the time to recognize the chapters who were able to send representatives to NatCon2013!

Congratulations to:
Alpha Omega- THE Florida State University
Beta Xi- University of Florida
Gamma Epsilon- University of Miami
Epsilon Alpha- University of South Carolina
Epsilon Theta- Georgia Tech
Epsilon Lambda (life member)- North Carolina Central University
Zeta Beta- Tuskegee University
Zeta Psi- University of Central Florida
Eta Phi- Vanderbilt University
Theta Zeta- North Carolina A&T University
Theta Lambda- Auburn University
Iota Xi- Elon University

During National Convention, we were able to witness various traditions from various districts and we even got to bond as the SED! In our district caucus on Friday night, we discussed our candidates for National Office, and we also took some time to discuss our thoughts for the SED this year…
Some of us discovered we were not aware of district or national operations, some of us were old heads, some of us are seeking change, some of us see growth and forward progress; but through all of the things we discussed, the unifying thought spoke of involvement, which happens to be one of the 2013-2014 SED Council’s goals of this year!

So, as we end the summer and start the school year, be prepared to get involved! But not only at your school and chapter, venture out and make friends with sisters and brothers around the Southeast District!! I challenge you to get outside your comfort zone and road trip to a chapter outside of your state or region! Together, we can make a difference and build the SED to be even more of a powerhouse! Let’s reach out this year to those chapters who may not be as strong as our own, let’s make sure everyone knows they are welcome in the SED family!

As always, I congratulate you on being unique and spectacular in your way! Enjoy the rest of your summer and if you ever need anything, please do not hesitate to contact any member of your SED Council!

Guide to National Convention!

Hey SED:

So I realized this morning when I logged into the website that I never publicized this post containing the 2nd Part for the Guide to Convention. My mistake! While National Convention starts tomorrow, it would be awesome to take a look at this and make sure you’ve got everything you need and that you’re all ready to take part in the most awesome National Convention ever! : )

-Alfred : )

Good evening, SED!

We are only 11 days ONE DAY away from the start of the 2013 Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma National Convention!!!! In this portion of the guidebook, you will find lists such as “What to Do,” “Who to Meet,” “What to Pack,” our official communication methods, and, of course, the finalized 2013 TBS Convention Schedule!!! Also, attached to this email, you will find BOTH portions of the Guide to Convention! 🙂

Composing Our Future: June 15 Deadline

Hey SED:

Here’s an e-mail sent out on the Listserves from Kevin Earnest. Check it out below:

Sisters of Tau Beta Sigma

This biennium, the National Council is challenging you to submit a work for wind band that references songs in the current Sorority repertoire. This piece should be 3-7 minutes long and encompass both the aesthetic qualities of our sorority and the spirit of all members past, present, and future. This arrangement should draw upon thematic elements of all three of the songs in the Sorority’s current repertoire: “The National Hymn,” “The Loyalty Song,” and “The Affirmation.”

Submissions must include digital and hard copies of a computer generated score; finalists will be expected provide individual parts at National Convention. Furthermore, submissions must include a recording of the piece. Any individual active member or group of active members of the Sorority may submit a song for consideration from now until June 15, 2013. The winning composer(s) will receive an award of $200 and the work will be premiered by the Reading Band at the 2013 National Convention conducted by a member of the National Council.

All materials must be postmarked to National Headquarters no later than June 15, 2013 with Attn: Composing Our Future clearly written on the envelope. In addition, please email Kevin Earnest, NVPSP, a digital copy of the complete submission at kevin@tbsigma.org.

5 for 5/15

Dear Southeast District,

Here are the 5 important things to know on May 15. 2013.

1. THE 2014 SED CONVENTION DATES ARE HEREEEEE!

I am proud to announce that the 2014 Southeast District Convention will be hosted at the Georgia Institute of Technology (GT) in ATL, GA the weekend of March 21-23, 2014. As more convention resources become available (i.e. website for registration), we will relay that information to you. Please help me in congratulating the Epsilon Theta chapter of Tau Beta Sigma and the Iota chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi for their hard work and dedication so far!

2. WANT TO GET A SWEET TAN, how about working on it at FLORIDA DAY?!

There are several ITB events happening this summer. Beginning with a fun filled, sun filled weekend in Orlando, FL. Florida Day, hosted by the Zeta Psi chapter of Tau Beta Sigma and the Eta Sigma chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, is a social event held on the University of Central Florida campus every year. The best part about Florida Day is you do NOT have to be a member of a FL chapter to tan at their pool! I hope you will consider traveling down to Orlando NEXT WEEKEND, May 24-26&, as we celebrate the bond with some rays and good food.

3. CHAPTER SUMMARY REPORTS ARE DUE JUNE 1st

The Chapter Summary Report is National HQ’s way of reading about your individual chapters and celebrating their diversity! Do not forget when submitting this paperwork, the actual form needs to be submitted by June 1st, but your Director of Bands AND your Chapter Sponsor must also approve it by June 1st for it to be considered on time!

4. National Convention Travel

This year, your SED Joint Councils wants to facilitate NatCon travel to as many SED members as possible. To do this, we have devised the SED Takeover NatCon trip. This trip, beginning in Tallahassee, FL, will stop in Birmingham, AL; ATL, GA; and Charlotte, NC; before continuing on to Convention in Springfield, MA. The total cost of the trip is $425, however not only do you get a way there and back, you also get HOTEL while at convention! If you are interested in this trip, please contact me (sedpres@tbsigma.org) AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! We are currently trying to determine whether there is enough interest to make this trip possible. Please reach out and let us know if you are interested!

5. TBS SED Applications due THIS FRIDAY, May 17th!

There are 2 applications for TBS SED due on May 17th, 2013. One is the T-shirt competition application/design and the other is the Appointed Position Applications! If you are interested in applying for either of these great opportunities, please contact me (sedpres@tbsigma.org) or Sal (sedtreasurer@tbsigma.org) ASAP.

Congratulations, recent graduates and initiates! And congratulations to those of you who managed to survive another year of school and life ITB!

I hope to see you all this summer at the various ITB activities. As always, if you have questions about anything, let me know! Happy Wednesday/Thursday!

UPDATED TRIP INFO- INCLUDING FL

Hey Brothers and Sisters of the SED,

I have received several concerned emails from brothers/sisters who live in FL about being excluded (far away) from the pick up sites for the SED Takeover NatCon trip…

Well, I want you to know, WE HEARD YOU! And we delivered.

The new travel itinerary is as follows:

Leaving from TALLAHASSEE, FL on July 22nd (2ish pm),
Driving to and stopping in BIRMINGHAM, AL (7ish pm),
Driving to and stopping in ATLANTA, GA (9ish pm),
Driving to and stopping in CHARLOTTE, NC (midnight ish),
Arriving in SPRINGFIELD, MA (noon ish).

The trip is looking to be about $400, including TRAVEL AND LODGING for convention. We will stay 4 nights at the host hotel (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday) and then we will board the busses after banquet Saturday night and arrive home on Sunday, July 28.

I am very pleased with the amount of participation thus far, but to make this a reality, we need more! We altered the trip for you, the state of Florida, so join us and get ready for the trip of a lifetime!!!!

You can find the form here.

Even if you are not a 100% sure traveler, please fill out the Travel Intent form by MONDAY, May 6th, so that we have an idea of who is interested.

As always, if you have any questions, please email me at sedweb@tbsigma.org. AND please send this information to every SED sister and brother you know!

Those Tuesdays Though…

Hey SED,

I hope you are having a Terrific Tuesday! But, if not, here are some things to get rid of the Terrible Tuesday Blues.

1. SED TAKEOVER NATCON! I have decided to extend the deadline for the SED Takeover NatCon Intent form until MONDAY, MAY 6th. This is to allow people to focus on finishing school this week. BUT get your Intent Form for travel in by MONDAY to be considered for the trip. Share this with all SED-ers! We want a great showing in Springfield this summer and THIS TRIP IS CHEAP!!!! For between $300-450 (depending on interest) you will get TRAVEL AND LODGING for NatCon.

Find the form here.

2. TBS SED Appointed Positions! Applications for the TBS SED Appointed Positions (Song Leader, Historian, Parliamentarian) will be accepted until Friday, May 17th. You will need to submit the application along with a letter of recommendation from your chapter. Email sedpres@tbsigma.org with any further questions.

3. TBS SED T-Shirt Competition! Have you always wanted to design a shirt that is sold to a BUNCH of people? Well, now is your chance! Create a shirt for TBS SED to produce and sell this year and at National Convention! Mandatory: all 7 SED states must be present somehow on the shirt… Other ideas: turtles, crest, Wava, pineapples, Belinda’s face, etc… Applications and designs due FRIDAY, MAY 17th. Further questions can be directed towards sedtreasurer@tbsigma.org. (That part about my face was a joke :] )

4. CONGRATULATIONS, to all recently initiated sisters/brothers and also any newly elected chapter officers! If you have recently added new members or officers, make sure to update all your chapter’s information on the Online Membership & Reporting System. Your District Officers and your National Officers appreciate you!

5. Chapter Summary Reports! Now this news does not apply to everyone, but as a reminder, at the end of the school year, JUNE 1st, your Chapter Summary Reports are due. This is typically filled out by the current or newly elected President. Make sure to submit this online with enough time for your chapter sponsor and DoB to approve it, BEFORE JUNE 1st!

Have a great rest of your week, good luck with finals! As we enter the summer months, never forget, the year does not end for ITB when finals are complete.
We’d love to see each of you at every event this summer (INCLUDING NATIONAL CONVENTION)!!!!!!
